Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to the Mediterranean region but now cultivated worldwide. Greek oregano, considered the gold standard, offers more robust flavor than Mediterranean varieties, while Mexican oregano (Lippia palmeri) from Central America provides different aromatic compounds altogether and is not botanically related to true oregano. The essential oils—primarily carvacrol and thymol—are responsible for oregano's characteristic pungency and antimicrobial properties.
