About Recidemia

The definitive encyclopedia of world recipes

What is Recidemia?

Recidemia is an open encyclopedia of world recipes, organized using the Recidemia Culinary Index (RCI) — a hierarchical numbering system inspired by the Aarne-Thompson-Uther (ATU) index used in folklore studies. Every recipe type receives a unique, structured identifier that encodes its place in a four-level taxonomy: Domain, Family, Type, and Variant.

The goal is to create a comprehensive, scholarly reference for the world’s recipes, making them searchable, citable, and interconnected across culinary traditions.

Data Sources & Attribution

The foundational recipe data in Recidemia was originally contributed to the Wikibooks Cookbook project by volunteer editors. This content is used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0).

Recipe images are sourced from multiple platforms including Wikimedia Commons, Openverse, Flickr, Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay. Each image is used under its own license — typically Creative Commons (CC BY-SA, CC BY, or Public Domain) or the source platform’s free-use license. The specific license, photographer, and source link for each image are displayed on the page where it appears.

The RCI taxonomy, cuisine classification system, and all editorial enhancements are original work by the Recidemia project.
