blueberries

ProduceFresh blueberries are typically in season from May through August in North America, with peak availability in June and July. Frozen and processed blueberries are available year-round.

Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, along with vitamin C, vitamin K, and dietary fiber. A one-cup serving provides approximately 84 calories and is notably low in sodium and fat.

About

Blueberries are small, round berries from plants in the genus Vaccinium, native to North America and cultivated widely across temperate regions. These berries measure approximately 5-16 millimeters in diameter and develop a deep blue to blue-black color when ripe, covered in a characteristic whitish bloom. The interior flesh contains numerous tiny seeds and exhibits a sweet-tart flavor profile with subtle floral and earthy notes. Major cultivars include the highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), the highbush type, lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), and rabbiteye blueberry (Vaccinium ashei), each with distinct growing requirements and flavor characteristics.

Culinary Uses

Blueberries function as both a fresh fruit and a cooked ingredient across numerous culinary applications. They are consumed fresh in breakfast dishes, desserts, and baked goods including muffins, pies, jams, and compotes. In savory contexts, blueberries appear in duck and pork preparations, cheese pairings, and vinaigrettes, their acidity and slight tannins complementing rich proteins. The berries are also processed into syrups, preserves, and dried preparations for year-round use. Their mild sweetness and firm structure when cooked make them adaptable to both hot and cold applications without losing integrity.
