Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly butter a medium baking dish, approximately 8x8 inches or equivalent.

2
Combine the fresh blueberries and pitted cherries in a large bowl, then toss with half of the granulated sugar until the fruit is evenly coated. Transfer the sweetened fruit mixture into the prepared baking dish in an even layer.

Finely chop the crystallized ginger into small pieces and set aside. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining granulated sugar, and chopped crystallized ginger, stirring until evenly distributed.

4
Cut the cold butter into small cubes and work it into the flour mixture using your fingertips or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse, sandy crumbs with pea-sized clumps.
5 minutes
5
Sprinkle the buttered crumb topping evenly over the fruit layer in the baking dish, ensuring full coverage from edge to edge.
3 minutes
6
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbling around the edges.

7
Remove the Betty from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before serving to let the filling set slightly.
