golden raisins

ProduceYear-round; primarily harvested in California from August through October, with processed golden raisins available consistently throughout the year.

Golden raisins are concentrated sources of natural sugars, dietary fiber, and polyphenol antioxidants. They provide iron, potassium, and boron, supporting bone health and mineral balance.

About

Golden raisins are dried grapes (Vitis vinifera) produced primarily from seedless green or white grape varieties, particularly Thompson Seedless grapes, grown mainly in California. Unlike natural sun-dried raisins that darken to brown, golden raisins are treated with an antioxidant (typically potassium sorbate) and dried mechanically or through specific sun-drying protocols that preserve their lighter amber-to-golden color. The grapes are dried for 2-3 weeks, resulting in shriveled fruit with concentrated sweetness and a characteristic plump, tender texture. Golden raisins are slightly less wrinkled than their brown counterparts and possess a more delicate, floral sweetness with subtle citrus notes.

Culinary Uses

Golden raisins are used in both sweet and savory applications across numerous cuisines. In baking, they appear in cakes, cookies, scones, and breads, where their plump texture and milder sweetness make them preferable to darker raisins. They feature prominently in Middle Eastern and Indian pilafs, rice dishes, and tagines, where they provide sweetness and texture alongside spices. In British cuisine, they are traditional in scones and tea cakes. Golden raisins are also incorporated into relishes, chutneys, and grain-based salads. Their tender texture absorbs liquid readily, making them ideal for plumping in warm water, wine, or spirits before use.
