Rum is a distilled spirit produced from sugarcane byproducts, primarily molasses or sugarcane juice, through fermentation and distillation. Originating in the Caribbean during the 17th century, rum has become a global spirit with diverse styles reflecting regional production methods. The flavor profile varies significantly by origin and aging: light rums tend toward subtle, clean notes; dark rums develop rich, complex characteristics with vanilla, caramel, and spice undertones from barrel aging. Rum functions as both a cooking ingredient and a finished beverage.
