About

Rum is a distilled spirit produced from sugarcane byproducts, primarily molasses or sugarcane juice, through fermentation and distillation. Originating in the Caribbean during the 17th century, rum has become a global spirit with diverse styles reflecting regional production methods. The flavor profile varies significantly by origin and aging: light rums tend toward subtle, clean notes; dark rums develop rich, complex characteristics with vanilla, caramel, and spice undertones from barrel aging. Major production regions—the Caribbean (Jamaica, Barbados, Puerto Rico), Central America (Guatemala, Honduras), and South America (Guyana, Venezuela)—each cultivate distinct styles governed by local regulations, yeast cultures, and maturation practices.

Culinary Uses

Rum functions as both a cooking ingredient and a finished beverage. In the kitchen, it is essential in Caribbean, Latin American, and tropical cuisines, added to sauces (particularly for seafood and ham), curries, desserts, and marinades. Classic applications include daiquiris, mojitos, dark and stormy cocktails, and rum punches. For cooking, both white and dark rums are used to deglaze pans, reduce into glazes, and flavor baked goods, custards, and tropical fruit preparations.
