orange

ProduceIn the Northern Hemisphere, peak season extends from November through May, with Valencia oranges harvested through summer; in Southern Hemisphere regions, availability peaks during winter months (June–September). Year-round availability exists in most markets due to global production and cold storage capabilities.

Oranges are rich in vitamin C (ascorbic acid), providing approximately 70% of daily requirements per medium fruit, and contain soluble fiber (pectin) that supports digestive health. They also provide folate, potassium, and antioxidants including hesperidin and naringenin.

About

The orange (Citrus × sinensis) is a hybrid citrus fruit derived from crossing Citrus maxima (pummelo) and Citrus reticulata (mandarin), native to Southeast Asia and now cultivated globally in temperate and subtropical regions. The fruit is characterized by a thick, textured rind that ranges from deep orange to yellow-orange in color, encasing segmented flesh containing numerous juice sacs filled with a sweet to tart acidic juice. The flavor profile is predominantly sweet with subtle acidity, though this varies considerably by cultivar, growing conditions, and harvest maturity. Major commercial varieties include Valencia (prized for juice production), Navel (seedless, eating oranges), and Blood oranges (pigmented flesh with raspberry-like notes).

Culinary Uses

Oranges serve multiple functions across global cuisines, consumed fresh as a whole fruit, pressed into juice, or processed into marmalades and candied peels. In cooking, orange juice and zest are fundamental to both savory and sweet applications: used in sauces for duck, pork, and game; incorporated into marinades and dressings; and featured prominently in desserts, baked goods, and confections. The fruit appears in classic dishes such as French duck à l'orange, Asian stir-fries, and Mediterranean seafood preparations. Candied orange peel is a traditional confection and ingredient in mixed spice blends. Fresh segments are used in salads, compotes, and as a garnish, while the essential oils in the zest provide aromatic intensity when freshly grated.
