currants

ProduceYear-round. Dried currants are shelf-stable and available throughout the year, though fresh currant berries (a different product) have limited summer availability in some regions.

Rich in antioxidants, iron, and natural sugars; provide dietary fiber and are a good source of minerals including potassium and manganese.

About

Currants are small dried berries produced from seedless varieties of grapes, primarily Corinthian grapes (Vitis vinifera), originally from the Mediterranean region, particularly Greece. The name derives from "Corinthe" (Corinth). These berries are harvested, dried naturally in the sun for several weeks, and shrivel to approximately one-quarter their original size. They are darker and smaller than raisins, with a wrinkled appearance and dense texture. Currants have a sweet, slightly tangy flavor profile with subtle winey notes, distinguished from other dried fruits by their concentrated sweetness and firm bite.

Culinary Uses

Currants are used extensively in both sweet and savory applications across numerous culinary traditions. In baking, they feature prominently in scones, fruit cakes, bread puddings, and traditional British and Irish baked goods. They are common in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines in pilafs, grain dishes, and stuffings, often paired with nuts and spices. Currants are also used in compotes, jams, and preserves, and feature in some spice rubs for meats. Their small size and chewy texture make them suitable for both incorporation into batters and as garnishes. They pair well with warm spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom.
