Cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy, turning occasionally. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess grease.

While the bacon cools, slice the tomato into thin, even rounds and slice the onion into thin rings. Set aside on a clean plate.

Lay out two slices of bread on a clean cutting board or flat work surface. Place one or two slices of American cheese on one piece of bread.

Layer the crispy bacon strips evenly on top of the American cheese, breaking them to fit the bread if necessary.

Arrange the sliced tomatoes over the bacon in a single, even layer. Season lightly with salt and pepper if desired.

Place the onion rings on top of the tomato slices, distributing them evenly across the sandwich.

Top with the second slice of bread and press down gently to hold the sandwich together. Cut diagonally in half and serve immediately.
