of orange juice

BeveragesWhile oranges peak in winter (November–March) in the Northern Hemisphere, orange juice is available year-round due to global cultivation, Southern Hemisphere production (which peaks during Northern Hemisphere summer), and the widespread availability of concentrate and processed juice.

Orange juice is an excellent source of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), essential for immune function and collagen synthesis, and contains folate, potassium, and flavonoids with antioxidant properties. However, it is high in natural sugars and lacks the dietary fiber present in whole oranges.

About

Orange juice is the liquid extract of the fruit of Citrus × sinensis, a hybrid citrus tree believed to have originated in Southeast Asia and now cultivated worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical climates. It is produced by mechanically pressing or squeezing fresh oranges to release the juice contained within the flesh. The juice is characteristically bright yellow-orange to deep orange in color, with a balanced flavor profile combining natural sweetness, acidity (from citric acid), and subtle bitter and floral notes. Commercial orange juice is available in several forms: freshly squeezed (with pulp and no additives), fresh-pressed (pasteurized), concentrate (reduced by evaporation and reconstituted with water), and not-from-concentrate varieties.

Culinary Uses

Orange juice serves as both a beverage and cooking ingredient across global cuisines. It is consumed fresh as a breakfast staple and refreshing drink, and also features in marinades, glazes, sauces, and desserts where its acidity and sweetness provide balance and moisture. In cocktails and mixed drinks, it is foundational to classics such as the Screwdriver, Tequila Sunrise, and Mimosa. In cooking, orange juice is used to deglaze pans, marinate poultry and seafood, and complement both sweet and savory dishes. The juice's natural acidity helps tenderize meat and brighten flavors in salsas, vinaigrettes, and reduction-based sauces.
