bisquick baking mix

GrainsYear-round. As a shelf-stable, processed baking mix, Bisquick is available continuously in retail distribution.

Bisquick provides carbohydrates from wheat flour and calories from added fat, with added nutrients including iron and B vitamins; it is not a significant source of protein or fiber without additional ingredients.

About

Bisquick is a pre-mixed commercial baking flour blend first introduced by General Mills in 1931. The base consists of soft wheat flour, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, salt, and leavening agents (baking soda and sodium aluminum phosphate), with added dextrose, monoglycerides, and sodium stearoyl lactylate as emulsifiers and conditioners. The formulation is designed to streamline the preparation of quick breads and baked goods by combining dry ingredients that would otherwise be measured and mixed separately. Modern versions maintain relatively stable shelf life through careful ingredient selection and are available in original, reduced-fat, and heart-healthy formulations.

Bisquick functions as a convenience product that eliminates the need to separately source and measure flour, fat, salt, and leavening agents. The pre-incorporated fat distinguishes it from plain flour and allows for faster preparation with reduced precision in measuring, as the ratios are pre-calibrated for common baking applications.

Culinary Uses

Bisquick is employed primarily for quick breads, pancakes, biscuits, dumplings, and drop-style applications where minimal mixing is desired. The product has become foundational in American home baking for breakfast items such as pancakes, waffles, and muffins. It is also used in cobbler toppings, shortcakes, and as a coating for fried foods. Beyond sweet applications, Bisquick functions in savory dishes including chicken and dumplings, biscuit pizzas, and skillet breads. The pre-emulsified fat allows for simplified batter preparation without requiring creaming or cutting cold butter into flour—a significant advantage in quick-preparation scenarios.
