Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a greased baking dish or individual ramekins.

Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add finely sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly golden.

In a large mixing bowl, combine mashed sweet potato, cooked onions with butter, eggs, ground cinnamon, milk, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is uniform and well-combined.

Transfer the sweet potato mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly across the bottom.

Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Divide into four portions and serve warm.
