Method
1
Slice the French bread into ¾-inch-thick slices on a slight diagonal, aiming for about 8-10 slices total.
2
Whisk together the orange juice, whipping cream, eggs, ground cinnamon, sugar, and nutmeg in a shallow bowl until well combined.
3
Heat 1½ tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it foams and begins to brown slightly.
2 minutes
4
Working in batches, dip each bread slice into the orange-egg mixture for 2-3 seconds per side, ensuring it absorbs the liquid without becoming oversaturated, then place immediately into the hot skillet.
5
Cook the first batch for 3-4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and caramelized.
3 minutes
6
Flip the slices and cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
2 minutes
7
Transfer the cooked slices to a serving plate and repeat with the remaining butter and bread slices.
8
Arrange the French toast on a serving platter and dust generously with powdered sugar.
9
Sprinkle maple sugar over the top as a final garnish before serving warm.
