cream sherry

BeveragesYear-round. As a fortified, aged wine product, cream sherry is shelf-stable and available throughout the year.

Cream sherry provides minimal nutritional value beyond carbohydrates from residual sugars; it is primarily consumed for flavor rather than nutrition. Like other fortified wines, it contains alcohol and should be consumed in moderation.

About

Cream sherry is a fortified wine produced in the Jerez region of southwestern Spain, characterized by a rich, sweet profile achieved through the addition of concentrated grape juice and/or a small amount of brandy to a base sherry wine. The production process involves the solera system, a traditional method of aging wines in stacked wooden casks where younger wines are gradually blended with older ones, creating a complex, layered flavor profile. Cream sherry typically contains 15–22% alcohol by volume and exhibits notes of caramel, dried fruit, nuts, and spice, with a full body and smooth, velvety mouthfeel.

Culinary Uses

In cooking, cream sherry is primarily used as a finishing agent and flavoring component in both savory and sweet preparations. It is commonly added to soups (particularly cream-based varieties), sauces, gravies, and meat dishes to provide depth and richness. Cream sherry also appears in desserts, custards, and dessert wines, where its sweetness and complexity enhance traditional recipes. It is also consumed as an aperitif or dessert wine, served slightly chilled in small quantities, and pairs well with nuts, aged cheeses, and rich pastries.
