Heat a large pot over medium-high heat and add the crumbled Italian sausage, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon and cooking until browned, about 5 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.

Add 8 cups of water to the pot with the cooked sausage and bring to a boil.

Stir in the pinto beans, northern beans, black beans, and lentils into the boiling water.

Return the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, for about 25 minutes until the beans and lentils begin to soften.

Pour in the tomato or spaghetti sauce and stir well to combine with the bean mixture.

Continue simmering over low heat for an additional 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beans and lentils are tender and the flavors are well blended.

Taste the soup and adjust seasoning as desired, then ladle into serving bowls and serve hot.
