Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.

Add the 1-pound tofu cubes to the hot oil and cook without stirring for 2-3 minutes until the bottom is golden, then carefully toss and continue cooking until all sides are crispy and light brown.

Push the tofu to the sides of the wok, add the 4 minced garlic cloves and 2 minced chile peppers to the center, and stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant.

Add the 1/2 pound green beans to the wok and stir everything together, cooking for 3-4 minutes until the beans are tender-crisp.

Pour in 1 tablespoon tamari (or soy sauce) and 1 teaspoon sugar, then toss all ingredients together until evenly coated and the sauce is absorbed.

Remove from heat and stir in the 1/2 cup fresh chopped basil until just combined, then transfer to a serving plate and serve immediately.
