Slice the bread into 8 slices of even thickness, about ΒΌ inch thick.

Slice the cheese into 4 portions that fit within the bread slices.

Lay out 4 slices of bread on a clean work surface and place one portion of cheese on each slice.

Top each cheese-covered slice with a second slice of bread to form 4 sandwiches, pressing gently to secure.

Divide the butter into 4 equal portions and soften slightly at room temperature for easier spreading.

Spread an even layer of butter on the outer surface of the top bread slice of each sandwich.

Flip each sandwich and spread butter on the other outer surface (what is now the bottom) of each sandwich.

Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat until a drop of water sizzles on contact.

Place the buttered sandwiches on the hot skillet and cook until the bottom is golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes.
