1
Heat canola oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add finely chopped onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent, about 4-5 minutes.
2
Stir in finely minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to let it burn.

3
Add chili powder and ground cumin to the pan, stirring constantly for 30 seconds to bloom the spices and release their oils.
4
Pour in ketchup, water, cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce, stirring well to combine all ingredients.
5
Stir in fresh lemon juice, packed dark brown sugar, and honey until the sugar is fully dissolved.
6
Add 2 dashes of Tabasco sauce and stir to incorporate.
7
Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer over medium heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 12-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly and flavors meld together.

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed, adding more Tabasco or vinegar for heat and tang. Allow to cool slightly before using or storing.
