Party Perfect Poached Pears

A beautiful simple dessert absolutely perfect for a dinner party. Use that bottle of wine that's been collecting dust in the back of your cupboard (you know the one) - it will work great in this classic dish!

Ingredients

  • pears (peeled
    halved and cored)
    4 unit
  • of wine (which ever kind you like)
    1 bottle
  • ½ - ¾ cup
  • aromatics - vanilla
    cinnamon, ginger, thyme, orange, juniper, etc. - use what you like and be creative!

Method

Peel the pears, then carefully halve them lengthwise and use a small spoon or melon baller to remove the core from each half, creating a small cavity.

Pour the entire bottle of wine into a large pot or saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.

Stir in the sugar (½ to ¾ cup, depending on desired sweetness) until fully dissolved, then add the vanilla pod and any other aromatics such as cinnamon, ginger, thyme, orange peel, or juniper berries.

Carefully place the pear halves into the simmering liquid, ensuring they are mostly submerged; add a bit of water if needed to cover them halfway.

Reduce heat to low and poach the pears gently for 15–20 minutes, until they are tender but still hold their shape when pierced with a fork.

Remove the pot from heat and allow the pears to cool slightly in the poaching liquid for a few minutes.

Using a slotted spoon, carefully transfer the pear halves to a serving dish or individual bowls.

Spoon some of the warm poaching liquid over the pears, then top each serving with a generous dollop of fresh whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream, and serve immediately.
