Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes to chill the mixing vessel before adding ingredients.

Measure and add 2 ounces of rum to the shaker, using a dark or aged rum for a richer tiki character.

Squeeze fresh lemons and add 1 ounce of freshly strained lemon juice to the shaker, avoiding bottled juice for the best flavor.

Add 3/4 ounce of maple syrup to the shaker, using a pure Grade A or Grade B maple syrup for pronounced flavor.

Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels very cold.

Fill a rocks glass or tiki mug generously with fresh ice cubes or crushed ice.
