Combine egg, sugar, and melted margarine in a mixing bowl, beating until well blended.

Stir in sour milk until the mixture is smooth and evenly incorporated.

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, salt, ginger, allspice, and other dry spices.

Fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined; do not overmix.

Turn dough onto a floured surface and roll out to approximately ¼-inch thickness.

Cut dough into donut shapes using a donut cutter or two round cutters of different sizes.

Heat oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 375°F (190°C).

Carefully place donuts into hot oil, frying 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown.

Remove donuts with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

While still warm, toss donuts in additional sugar or molasses-spiced sugar coating if desired.
