Peanuts (Arachis hypogaea) are legumes native to South America, not true nuts despite their common name. The plant produces pods underground that contain oil-rich seeds enclosed in a thin brown skin. Peanuts have a mild, slightly sweet, nutty flavor and contain approximately 50% fat by weight. Major cultivars include Valencia, Spanish, Virginia, and runner varieties, which vary in size, flavor intensity, and oil content. The seeds are typically cream-colored to reddish-brown and are consumed either raw or roasted.

Culinary Uses

Peanuts are consumed worldwide in numerous forms: roasted as a snack, ground into peanut butter, pressed for oil, or incorporated into both savory and sweet dishes. In Asian cuisines, they feature prominently in satay sauces, stir-fries, and noodle dishes. In American cuisine, peanut butter is a staple ingredient in sandwiches, baked goods, and desserts.
