packed dates

SweetenersYear-round. Dates are harvested primarily in late summer and fall, but the dried and packed format allows for consistent availability throughout the year in most markets.

Packed dates are rich in dietary fiber, potassium, and natural sugars (glucose, fructose, and sucrose), providing quick energy and supporting digestive health. They also contain polyphenol antioxidants and minerals including magnesium, copper, and manganese.

About

Packed dates are dried dates that have been compressed and densely pressed together, typically sold in blocks or containers. Dates are the fruit of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera), a tree native to the Middle East and North Africa, with botanical origins tracing back to Mesopotamia. Common varieties used for packing include Deglet Noor, Medjool, and Barhi dates. Packed dates retain the natural sweetness and chewy texture of dried dates while occupying less space than loose dried fruit. They develop a darker color and more concentrated flavor through the packing and storage process, with a caramel-like sweetness and slight tannin notes depending on the variety and age.

Culinary Uses

Packed dates serve as a natural sweetener and ingredient in both savory and sweet applications across Middle Eastern, North African, and increasingly global cuisines. They are chopped and added to baked goods, energy bars, and granola; softened and used to make date paste or syrup; or processed into date butter as a vegan substitute for traditional sweeteners and fat. Packed dates are also pitted and stuffed with nuts or cheese for appetizers, incorporated into tagines and stews in Moroccan cooking, or blended into smoothies and desserts. Their concentrated sweetness means a small amount provides significant flavor and sweetening power.
