orange or pineapple slice
Rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and dietary fiber; oranges also provide folate and potassium, supporting immune function and cardiovascular health.
About
The orange is the fruit of Citrus × sinensis, a hybrid between pomelo and mandarin that originated in Southeast Asia and was later cultivated extensively throughout the Mediterranean and the Americas. Oranges are spherical to slightly oblate citrus fruits with thick, dimpled orange-colored rind (peel) that encases segmented flesh containing juice sacs. The flesh ranges in color from pale yellow to deep blood-red depending on variety (Valencia, Navel, Blood orange, Jaffa), with a balance of sweetness and acidity that characterizes the species. Cross-sections or slices of oranges are commonly used for both presentation and consumption.
Culinary Uses
Orange slices are employed fresh as garnishes for beverages, desserts, and salads, offering visual appeal and a burst of citrus flavor. They are used in both sweet and savory preparations: candied as confections, stewed into compotes, juiced for sauces and vinaigrettes, and incorporated into glazes for roasted meats and poultry. In beverages, orange slices are steeped in cocktails, punches, and hot drinks. The sliced form also features in fruit tarts, sorbets, and marmalades. Different varieties (sweet Valencias for juice, firm Navels for slicing) suit different culinary applications.
