The term derives from the Dutch "brandewijn" (burnt wine), reflecting the heating process central to its production. The spirit typically contains 35–60% alcohol by volume and develops complex characteristics through aging in oak barrels, which imparts color, tannins, and subtle vanilla and caramel notes. Cognac and Armagnac, produced in specific regions of France under strict appellations, represent the most prestigious categories, though brandy is produced worldwide from grapes, apples (calvados), pears, and other fruits.

The aging process is fundamental to brandy's character: younger brandies are sharp and fiery, while extended barrel maturation (often 10–50+ years) yields smooth, sophisticated spirits with developed bouquets. Color ranges from pale gold in younger expressions to deep amber in vintage bottlings.

Brandy functions as both a sipping spirit and a cooking ingredient with distinct roles in the kitchen. In sauces and reductions, brandy adds depth and warmth—it is classically flamed to burn off harsh alcohols while retaining flavor complexity.
