NutraSweet® Spoonful™ is a tabletop sweetener product manufactured by The NutraSweet Company, formulated as a blend of aspartame and maltodextrin. Aspartame is a dipeptide methyl ester (L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine methyl ester) created through the chemical synthesis of two amino acids; it is approximately 200 times sweeter than sucrose by weight. Maltodextrin, a polysaccharide derived from corn, rice, or potato starch, serves as a bulking agent to provide the product with a volume and texture comparable to granulated sugar, making it suitable for one-to-one substitution in many applications. The combination allows the sweetener to measure and pour like conventional sugar while providing minimal calories.

The product was developed to address consumer demand for a convenient, spoonable artificial sweetener that could replace sugar in beverages and some food applications. The inclusion of maltodextrin distinguishes it from liquid or powdered aspartame products, offering improved handling characteristics and consumer familiarity with a granulated form.

It is suitable for some baking and cooking applications, though heat stability and taste profiles may differ from sucrose in certain preparations. The sweetener is employed in food manufacturing as a cost-effective alternative to sugar in low-calorie and diet-formulated products. Because aspartame can lose sweetness at high temperatures and prolonged heating, it is less suitable for applications requiring extended cooking times, such as jams or caramelized sauces. Best results occur in no-bake applications, cold beverages, and recipes where the sweetener is added after cooking.
