maraschino luxardo®

CondimentsYear-round; Maraschino Luxardo is a shelf-stable spirit produced through controlled fermentation and aging processes, ensuring consistent availability throughout the year.

Maraschino Luxardo is a distilled spirit containing approximately 32% alcohol by volume; as a liqueur, it provides minimal nutritional value beyond carbohydrates from residual sugars and the antioxidant compounds present in cherry extract.

About

Maraschino Luxardo is a cherry liqueur produced in Padua, Italy, made from Marasca cherries (Prunus marasca), a small, dark, wild cherry variety native to the Dalmatian coast. The Luxardo distillery, founded in 1821, produces this spirit through a proprietary process involving the maceration and distillation of whole Marasca cherries in alcohol, followed by aging in wooden vats. The resulting liqueur is deep ruby-red in color with a complex, slightly almond-forward aroma derived from the cherry stones and a refined, delicately bitter finish characteristic of the Marasca varietal. Unlike the bright red, artificially colored maraschino cherries used in cocktails and desserts, Luxardo represents the traditional, unadulterated expression of cherry liqueur with minimal added sugar.

Culinary Uses

Maraschino Luxardo serves primarily as a cocktail component, most famously in the classic Cocktail a l'Ancienne, the Aviation, and the Last Word, where its subtle cherry flavor and slight bitterness add sophistication without overpowering other ingredients. In dessert work, it is used to flavor mousses, panna cottas, and chocolate preparations, or as a finishing drizzle for fruit compotes and gelatos. The liqueur pairs particularly well with chocolate, almond, and stone fruits, and is sometimes employed in savory applications such as duck glazes or bitter-forward condiments. It is typically added near the end of preparation to preserve its delicate aromatic profile.
