Splenda (sucralose) is a synthetic non-nutritive sweetener approximately 600 times sweeter than sucrose, produced through selective chlorination of sucrose molecules. Granular Splenda is a free-flowing crystalline powder formulated with maltodextrin and cellulose as bulking agents to approximate the volume and handling properties of table sugar. Unlike the parent sucrose molecule, sucralose is not metabolized by the human body and passes through the digestive system largely unchanged, resulting in zero caloric content. The ingredient appears as fine white granules with a texture similar to superfine sugar, though it lacks sugar's hygroscopic properties and remains stable in moisture-rich environments.

Sucralose was discovered in 1976 and approved by the FDA in 1998 for general food use. It is chlorine-based but considered safe by regulatory authorities worldwide, with an extensive safety record across decades of consumption. Granular Splenda is the consumer retail version designed as a direct one-to-one volume substitute for sugar in most applications.
