About
Galliano is an Italian herbal liqueur produced in Livorno, Tuscany, since 1821 by the Luxardo company. It is a golden-yellow spirit made from a proprietary blend of approximately 30 herbs, spices, and botanical extracts, including anise, vanilla, fennel, juniper, and other aromatics. The liqueur has an alcohol content of 42.3% ABV and is characterized by a complex, sweet-spiced flavor profile with prominent notes of licorice and vanilla, along with subtle herbal and floral undertones. Its distinctive pale golden color and elegant bottle design, featuring a tall slender shape, have made it iconic in mixology since the mid-20th century.
Culinary Uses
Galliano is primarily used in cocktails and mixed drinks, most famously in the Harvey Wallbanger and Galliano Hot Shot. Its sweet herbal-spiced character makes it suitable for both spirit-forward cocktails and cream-based drinks. Beyond mixology, it is occasionally used as a digestif (after-dinner liqueur) or added to desserts, pastries, and confections to impart herbal complexity. In culinary applications, it can be incorporated into dessert sauces, ice cream, or panna cotta to add aromatic depth. The liqueur pairs well with citrus, cream, coffee, and vanilla-based preparations.
