espresso beans

BeveragesYear-round. Coffee beans are harvested seasonally by origin (typically spring in Central and South America, fall in Africa and Asia), but espresso beans are dried, roasted, and distributed globally throughout the year, making them consistently available.

Rich in caffeine, providing approximately 63–75 mg per single shot, and contains polyphenols and chlorogenic acid with potential antioxidant properties. Espresso is very low in calories (3–5 per shot) when consumed without added milk or sweeteners.

About

Espresso beans are roasted coffee beans specifically selected and processed for use in espresso machines, which force hot water through finely ground coffee under high pressure to produce a concentrated beverage. While espresso can technically be made from any coffee bean variety, espresso beans are typically medium to dark roasted to develop the rich, full-bodied flavors and dense crema (the golden foam layer) characteristic of authentic espresso. The roast profile is darker than many filter coffee beans, ranging from city roast to full-city roast, which brings out bold, sometimes smoky or chocolatey notes and reduces perceived acidity. Common origins include Italian, Brazilian, and Central American beans, though blends combining multiple origins are standard for achieving balanced, complex flavor profiles suited to espresso's intense extraction method.

Culinary Uses

Espresso beans serve as the foundation for numerous coffee beverages and culinary applications. They are ground finely and extracted under pressure to create espresso shots consumed solo or as the base for milk-based drinks such as cappuccinos, lattes, and macchiatos. Beyond beverages, espresso appears in desserts and savory dishes: ground espresso powder enhances chocolate cakes, tiramisu, and coffee ice creams, while whole or ground beans flavor sauces, rubs for meat, and even chili. In Italian and international café culture, espresso remains central to daily food traditions, often served as a digestif after meals or paired with biscotti and pastries.
