chilled sparkling water

BeveragesYear-round; as an industrially produced or naturally sourced carbonated beverage, chilled sparkling water is available consistently throughout the year.

Unflavored sparkling water contains no calories, sugar, or macronutrients; mineral varieties may provide trace amounts of calcium and magnesium depending on mineral content of the source water. The carbonation and acidity have minimal nutritional significance in typical consumption amounts.

About

Sparkling water is carbonated water produced by infusing pressurized carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas into purified or mineral water. The carbonation creates effervescence and a slightly acidic pH (typically 3.5–4.0), giving the beverage its characteristic tingling mouthfeel. Sparkling water may be naturally carbonated (from mineral springs containing dissolved CO₂) or artificially carbonated through industrial processing. The term encompasses unflavored varieties as well as those with natural or artificial flavoring; mineral water that is naturally carbonated retains dissolved minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and sodium depending on source.

When served chilled, sparkling water is refreshing and palate-cleansing, with a clean, neutral taste profile in unflavored versions. It differs from soda water (which may contain added salts for preservation) and from flavored soft drinks (which contain sweeteners and additives).

Culinary Uses

Chilled sparkling water serves multiple roles in cooking and beverage preparation. It is commonly used as a mixer in cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks, where carbonation adds texture and refinement. In cooking, sparkling water is employed in batters for tempura and fried foods, where the carbonation creates lighter, airier crusts. It is used to deglaze pans, refresh salads, and as a component in gelées and aspics for its neutral acidity and carbonation. Sparkling water also appears in desserts—particularly in sorbets and granitas—where carbonation and chill enhance texture and brightness. The beverage is central to aperitifs and palate cleansing between courses in refined dining contexts.
