Add the softened butter or margarine to the sifted powdered sugar and beat with an electric mixer on low speed until combined.

Pour in the milk 1 tablespoon at a time while continuing to mix, incorporating each addition fully before adding more.

Add the vanilla extract and beat on medium speed for 1-2 minutes until the frosting reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency.

Adjust consistency as needed by adding more milk (a few drops at a time) if the frosting is too thick, or more powdered sugar if it is too thin.
