- boiling water or hot milk2 cups

Place the grated coconut in a large heatproof bowl or container.

Pour 2 cups of boiling water or hot milk over the grated coconut, stirring well to combine thoroughly.

Let the mixture steep for 5 minutes to allow the coconut to release its oils and flavor into the liquid.

Line a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth over a clean bowl and carefully pour the coconut mixture through to strain.

Press down gently on the coconut solids with the back of a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible, then discard the spent coconut.

Pour the strained coconut milk into a serving pitcher or container and let cool slightly before serving.
