Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

Combine whole-wheat flour, flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl, whisking together to distribute the baking soda evenly throughout the dry ingredients.

Pour buttermilk into the center of the dry mixture and stir with a wooden spoon or hands until a shaggy, slightly sticky dough forms; do not overwork.

Turn dough onto a lightly floured work surface and gently shape into a round loaf approximately 7 inches in diameter, handling minimally to keep the crumb tender.

Place dough on the prepared baking sheet and use a sharp knife to score a cross about ½ inch deep across the top of the loaf.

Bake for 40 minutes until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
