Strained yogurt, also known as Greek yogurt or labneh depending on strain duration and origin, is a dairy product produced by straining conventional yogurt through fine mesh or cheesecloth to remove excess whey. This process concentrates the milk solids, resulting in a thicker, creamier product with a higher protein content and more tangy flavor than regular yogurt. The straining process typically removes 40-60% of the whey, intensifying the lactic acid bacteria cultures and creating a denser texture. Regional variations include Greek yogurt (strained for a few hours), Turkish yogurt, and the Middle Eastern labneh (strained overnight or longer until spreadable).

The resulting product has a smooth, dense consistency ranging from creamy (lightly strained) to spoon-thick (heavily strained), with a pronounced sour taste characteristic of the yogurt base. The fat content and tanginess vary depending on the milk source and straining duration.
