About

Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is a leafy green vegetable of the amaranth family, native to central and southwestern Asia. Thawed and drained spinach refers to frozen spinach that has been defrosted and excess moisture removed, commonly sold in brick form or individually quick frozen (IQF). The thawing and draining process concentrates the vegetable's flavor and reduces its volume substantially—approximately 10 ounces of frozen spinach yields roughly 1 cup when thawed and drained. The leaves are dark green with a tender texture and earthy, slightly mineral flavor that intensifies after freezing due to cell breakdown and moisture loss.

Culinary Uses

Thawed and drained spinach is a versatile ingredient used extensively in soups, stews, casseroles, pastas, and baked dishes where its concentrated flavor and reduced moisture content prevent dishes from becoming watery. It is particularly valued in creamed spinach, spinach and feta pies, lasagnas, quiches, savory custards, and Asian stir-fries. The pre-cooked nature of frozen spinach (blanched during processing) makes it convenient for quick incorporation into hot dishes. It pairs well with garlic, nutmeg, cream, cheese, and aromatics, and is commonly used in Mediterranean and Northern European cuisines. Proper draining is essential to prevent excess liquid from disrupting the texture of delicate dishes.
