About

Spanspek is a variety of cantaloupe melon (Cucumis melo reticulatus) originating from South Africa, though the name derives from Dutch influence on the region's agricultural terminology. It is a small to medium-sized melon with a beige or tan netted rind and pale orange or salmon-colored flesh. The fruit is characterized by its sweet, aromatic flavor profile with subtle notes of vanilla and peach, and a juicy, tender texture. Spanspek melons typically weigh 1-2 kilograms and contain a central cavity with flattened, cream-colored seeds. The netted surface pattern distinguishes it from smooth-skinned melon varieties.

Culinary Uses

Spanspek is primarily consumed fresh as a breakfast or dessert fruit, either halved and served chilled, or cut into wedges, cubes, or balls. In South African cuisine, it appears in fruit salads, smoothies, and is often paired with cured meats such as prosciutto or local biltong. The melon's natural sweetness and aromatic qualities make it suitable for sorbets, juices, and infusions. It is less commonly used in savory preparations, though can complement salads with soft cheeses or light vinaigrettes. The fruit should be refrigerated after ripening and consumed within a few days of peak maturity.
