snipped mint

Herbs & SpicesPeak growing season is late spring through early fall (May–September in Northern Hemisphere); however, mint is available year-round in most markets due to greenhouse cultivation and importation.

Mint is low in calories and provides vitamin A, vitamin C, and manganese; it is also valued for its digestive properties and antioxidant compounds including rosmarinic acid.

About

Mint refers to the fresh leaves of plants in the genus Mentha, most commonly spearmint (Mentha spicata) and peppermint (Mentha piperita), characterized by their bright green color, serrated or lance-shaped foliage, and highly aromatic volatile oils. Native to temperate regions of Europe and Asia, mint plants are herbaceous perennials that grow vigorously and are harvested by cutting or plucking individual leaves. The term "snipped" denotes mint that has been freshly cut or chopped into small, manageable pieces for culinary use. Spearmint exhibits a mild, sweet flavor with subtle menthol notes, while peppermint delivers a more pronounced menthol intensity and cooling sensation on the palate. Both varieties are rich in essential oils, primarily menthol and limonene, which impart their characteristic aroma and taste.

Culinary Uses

Snipped mint is employed fresh across numerous global cuisines as both a primary flavoring and garnish. It is essential in Middle Eastern and North African cooking, appearing in tabbouleh, Lebanese mezze platters, and Moroccan tea. In South Asian cuisine, mint features prominently in chutneys, raitas, and as a foundation for mint-infused beverages like Indian lassi. It is used to garnish cocktails, desserts, and fresh fruit preparations, and serves as a finishing herb in Vietnamese pho and other Southeast Asian soups. Mint pairs well with lamb, chicken, citrus, and chocolate, and is often combined with other herbs such as parsley and cilantro. Fresh snipped mint should be added near the end of cooking or as a final garnish to preserve its delicate flavor and vibrant color.
