small package of snap peas
Snap peas are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin K, and dietary fiber, with moderate amounts of folate and manganese. They are low in calories while providing plant-based protein.
About
Snap peas (Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon) are a cultivated variety of the garden pea plant, originating from breeding work in the late 20th century. They are characterized by flat, tender pods containing small spherical peas that remain edible and crisp even when mature, unlike traditional garden peas where the mature pod becomes tough and fibrous. The entire pod, seeds and all, is consumed raw or lightly cooked. Snap peas have a distinctive sweet flavor with a pleasant crunch, and are typically bright green in color, averaging 3-4 inches in length.
Culinary Uses
Snap peas are primarily consumed raw in salads, vegetable platters, and as a fresh snack due to their appealing crunch and natural sweetness. They are also briefly stir-fried, steamed, or blanched in Asian cuisines, particularly Chinese and Southeast Asian cooking, where they are often combined with garlic, ginger, and other vegetables. In Western cuisine, snap peas appear in spring and summer salads, composed vegetable dishes, and as a crudité component. Light cooking preserves their texture; prolonged heat renders them limp and diminishes their signature crispness.
