orange habanero chilies

ProduceOrange habaneros peak in summer through early fall (June-September) in temperate regions; in tropical areas, they are available year-round or have extended seasons. Dried and processed forms are available year-round in most markets.

Orange habaneros are rich in vitamin C, capsaicin, and antioxidants, with notably higher vitamin A content than many other pepper varieties. A 100-gram serving provides approximately 240% of the daily recommended vitamin C intake.

About

Orange habanero chilies are a variety of Capsicum chinense, a hot pepper species native to the Yucatán Peninsula and widely cultivated throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. These peppers are characterized by a lantern-shaped pod, typically measuring 1-2 inches in length, with a vibrant orange hue when fully mature. Orange habaneros rank between 100,000 and 350,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), making them significantly hotter than jalapeños but milder than the most extreme superhot peppers. Beyond their considerable heat, they possess a distinctive fruity, citrusy flavor profile with subtle floral and smoky undertones, distinguishing them from other hot peppers which tend toward grassy or vegetal notes. The pepper's thick-walled flesh provides excellent texture for drying and processing.

Culinary Uses

Orange habaneros are essential to Caribbean and Yucatec Mexican cuisines, where they feature prominently in hot sauces, salsas, and spice pastes. The peppers are used both fresh and dried; fresh peppers are commonly incorporated into salsas, marinades, and ceviches, while dried ones are ground into powders, reconstituted for sauces, or smoked for deeper flavor complexity. Their fruity heat complements fish, tropical fruits, and rich foods like pork and chocolate. In addition to savory applications, orange habaneros are used in hot pepper jellies, infused spirits, and dessert preparations. The peppers are frequently preserved through drying, smoking, or fermentation, allowing year-round access to their distinctive flavor.
