or frozen broad beans

ProduceFresh broad beans peak in spring and early summer (April-July in the Northern Hemisphere); frozen versions are available year-round, offering consistent quality outside the fresh season.

Rich in plant-based protein, dietary fiber, and folate, frozen broad beans support digestive health and sustained energy. They also provide manganese, iron, and polyphenol antioxidants, though individuals with favism (G6PD deficiency) should avoid them due to potentially harmful compounds.

About

Broad beans, also known as fava beans (Vicia faba), are legumes native to North Africa and Western Asia, now cultivated worldwide. These large, flat beans grow within thick, fibrous pods and possess a distinctive earthy, slightly bitter flavor with a creamy texture when cooked. Frozen broad beans are fresh beans that have been blanched and rapidly frozen immediately after harvest, preserving their nutritional content and flavor profile. They may be sold with or without the thin outer skin; shelled frozen broad beans are already hull-removed for convenience.

The beans themselves are pale green to whitish when young and mature to a speckled brown or deep green depending on variety and harvest time. Frozen broad beans retain the vegetable's characteristic starchy, buttery consistency and can be used interchangeably with fresh beans in most applications.

Culinary Uses

Frozen broad beans are a versatile ingredient used across Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and British cuisines. They appear in risottos, pasta dishes, and as a standalone side dish dressed with butter or olive oil and fresh herbs. In the Mediterranean, they feature prominently in mezze platters, often mashed with garlic (as in fava dip) or combined with herbs and legumes. British cuisine traditionally pairs them with crispy bacon or cream sauces. Frozen broad beans require no soaking and cook more quickly than dried varieties, making them practical for everyday cooking. They pair well with mint, dill, garlic, lemon, and aged cheeses.
