Fresh coconut (Cocos nucifera) is the fruit of a tropical palm tree native to the Indo-Pacific region and now cultivated throughout tropical climates worldwide. The mature fruit consists of a fibrous outer husk, a hard woody shell, and an inner cavity containing white flesh and translucent liquid endosperm commonly called coconut water. The flesh has a mild, slightly sweet flavor and high fat content, while the water is refreshing and mildly nutty. Coconuts are classified by maturity: immature green coconuts yield tender flesh and abundant water, while mature brown coconuts develop thicker, denser white meat and less water, making them ideal for extraction of coconut milk and oil.

The coconut palm is remarkably productive, with a single tree bearing fruit year-round and each nut taking 12 months to mature. Fresh coconut is prized for its versatility, with nearly every part—flesh, water, husk, and shell—serving culinary or industrial purposes.
