DairyYear-round. While cheddar can be made continuously, versions aged longer tend to be more available during winter months when traditional cheese-making peaks; however, commercial production ensures consistent availability.

Rich in calcium and phosphorus for bone health, with high protein content and B vitamins including riboflavin and cobalamin. Contains saturated fat and sodium; the aging process concentrates these nutrients while reducing lactose.

About

Natural sharp cheddar is a hard cow's milk cheese that originates from the English county of Somerset, though it is now produced worldwide. True cheddar cheese is made through a traditional process called "cheddaring," wherein curds are cut, heated, and repeatedly stacked to develop a dense texture and complex flavor. Sharp cheddar indicates the cheese has been aged for a minimum of nine months, developing a more pronounced, tangy flavor profile with notes of nuttiness and caramel compared to younger, milder variants. The cheese is typically pale yellow to deep orange in color, with a dense, slightly crumbly crystalline texture when mature. Natural cheddar, as opposed to processed varieties, contains no additives or emulsifiers, preserving the authentic flavors derived from milk quality, bacterial cultures, and aging conditions.

Culinary Uses

Sharp cheddar is used extensively in both savory and sweet applications across Anglo-American and global cuisines. It melts smoothly into sauces, gratins, and baked dishes, while also serving as a standalone table cheese for cheeseboards or snacking. Classic applications include sharp cheddar mac and cheese, cheese-based soups, cheddar biscuits, Welsh rarebit, and various baked goods. The pronounced flavor and lower moisture content make it less suited for fresh applications than mild cheddars, but its assertive character makes it excellent for pairing with cured meats, fruits like apples and pears, and bold condiments. Sharp cheddar also appears in American comfort foods such as cheese-topped burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, and cheese curds.
