About

Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens, also known as Poliomintha longiflora) is a woody perennial shrub native to Mexico and the southwestern United States, botanically distinct from Mediterranean oregano (Origanum vulgare). The plant produces small, aromatic leaves with a citrusy, slightly minty flavor profile that is notably different from its Mediterranean counterpart. Mexican oregano exhibits stronger, more assertive herbal notes with subtle citrus undertones and a mild earthiness, along with a faint peppery finish. The flavor intensity and aromatic compounds make it particularly suited to bold, spiced dishes common in Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisines.

Unlike Mediterranean oregano, Mexican oregano belongs to the Verbenaceae family rather than the Lamiaceae family, resulting in distinct chemical compositions and flavor characteristics. Dried Mexican oregano is the most common form in commerce, as the fresh leaves are less commonly available outside Mexico.

Culinary Uses

Mexican oregano is essential in Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Southwestern American cooking, where its robust flavor complements chiles, cumin, and garlic without being overwhelmed by bolder spices. It is a key component in salsas, moles, carne asada marinades, chile-based sauces, and bean dishes. The herb pairs well with lime, cilantro, and chocolate-based preparations. Mexican oregano is traditionally used in chorizo seasoning blends and is crucial to authentic enchilada sauces and dried chile preparations. Its citrusy character makes it particularly effective in dishes featuring ancho, guajillo, or chipotle chiles, where Mediterranean oregano would lack sufficient intensity.
