habanero powder

Herbs & SpicesYear-round as a shelf-stable dried spice, though fresh habaneros peak in late summer through early autumn in North America and are harvested year-round in tropical producing regions.

Rich in capsaicinoids, the compounds responsible for heat and associated metabolic benefits; contains vitamin C, vitamin A, and antioxidants that concentrate during the drying process.

About

Habanero powder is a dried and ground form of the habanero chili pepper (Capsicum chinense), a small, lantern-shaped hot pepper native to the Yucatan Peninsula and now cultivated throughout Central America, the Caribbean, and globally. The powder retains the characteristic fruity, citrus-forward flavor profile of fresh habaneros while concentrating their heat, typically measuring 100,000–350,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). Habanero powder ranges in color from orange to reddish-brown depending on ripeness at harvest and drying methods.

The production process involves harvesting mature peppers, drying them via sun-drying, air-drying, or kiln-drying, and grinding to a fine powder. The result is a pungent, complex spice with tropical notes alongside intense peppery heat.

Culinary Uses

Habanero powder serves as a versatile heat source and flavor agent in spice rubs, marinades, and dry seasoning blends, particularly in Yucatecan and Caribbean cuisines. It is employed in salsas, hot sauces, soups, and stews where both heat and fruity undertones are desired. The powder is often used to season meats, fish, and vegetables, and finds application in commercial hot sauce production and spice blends like jerk seasoning. When incorporated into recipes, it should be added gradually due to its concentrated potency; a small amount yields significant heat and flavor.
