These finger-like pods are technically the immature fruit of the okra plant, a member of the Malvaceae family native to tropical Africa. The pods feature a pale to medium green color, with a smooth or slightly ridged exterior and a soft interior containing numerous small, tender seeds. Fingers okra has a delicate, subtly grassy flavor with a slight earthiness, and when cooked, the flesh develops a tender, slightly mucilaginous texture characteristic of okra.

The cultivars bred for "fingers" okra were developed to meet culinary preferences for longer, more visually elegant pods that remain tender even at slightly larger sizes. These varieties were particularly popularized in Asian and Southeast Asian cuisines.
