broccoli spears thawed

ProduceFresh broccoli is in peak season from autumn through early spring (September–April in the Northern Hemisphere), though frozen broccoli spears are available year-round.

Broccoli is rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, and dietary fiber, along with compounds such as sulforaphane known for potential anti-inflammatory properties. A serving provides substantial micronutrient density with minimal caloric content.

About

Broccoli spears (Brassica oleracea var. italica) are the edible flowering heads and stalks of the broccoli plant, a cruciferous vegetable native to the Mediterranean region. The "spears" refer to the individual florets with attached stem portions, commonly separated from a whole head. Fresh broccoli spears are characterized by tightly clustered, dark green florets with a tree-like branching structure; thawed spears have been frozen and subsequently defrosted, resulting in a softer texture and slightly diminished crispness compared to fresh florets. The flavor remains mildly sweet and subtly bitter, with a slightly sulfurous undertone characteristic of the Brassica family.

Culinary Uses

Thawed broccoli spears are employed extensively in cooked preparations where texture softness is either acceptable or desirable. Common applications include stir-fries, steamed side dishes, creamed vegetable preparations, soups, casseroles, and pasta dishes. They integrate well into grain bowls, curry preparations, and roasted vegetable medleys. Thawed spears work particularly well in dishes requiring soft vegetables (such as broccoli and cheese casserole) or where the ingredient will be further cooked rather than served raw. They pair effectively with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, cream, cheese sauces, and sesame oil. Due to their pre-cooked frozen state, thawed spears require minimal cooking time.
