.5 t black pepper

Herbs & SpicesYear-round. Black pepper is available fresh year-round as a dried, shelf-stable spice since peppercorns are harvested, dried, and stored for long-term use.

Black pepper is rich in antioxidants and piperine, an alkaloid that enhances nutrient absorption and may have anti-inflammatory properties. It provides small amounts of minerals including manganese, iron, and magnesium.

About

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine native to Kerala in southern India, producing berries that are harvested green and dried until they shrivel and darken to black. The dried berries, or peppercorns, are the world's most traded spice by volume. Black pepper exhibits a sharp, pungent bite with subtle warm, woody, and citrus notes; the heat comes from the alkaloid piperine, which comprises 5-9% of the dried berry. Freshly ground black pepper delivers a more complex and volatile profile than pre-ground versions, which lose aromatic compounds rapidly after grinding.

Culinary Uses

Black pepper functions as a universal seasoning across virtually all savory cuisines, enhancing and brightening flavors without overpowering dishes. It is used in stocks, sauces, braises, roasts, and seafood preparations worldwide. The spice pairs well with salt to form the foundational seasoning for most dishes, and complements both delicate proteins and bold, robust flavors. Black pepper is also essential in spice blends such as garam masala, quatre épices, and zaatar. Grinding peppercorns freshly before use yields superior flavor compared to pre-ground pepper, which degrades in potency and aromatic complexity over time.
