/ 1 lb fresh baby squid

SeafoodPeak season is spring through early fall (April–September) in most Northern Hemisphere waters, though availability varies by region and fishing grounds. Mediterranean and Atlantic supplies are most abundant during warmer months. Frozen baby squid is available year-round in most markets.

Baby squid is a lean source of high-quality protein and rich in selenium, iodine, and B vitamins, particularly B12. It is low in fat and calories, making it a nutritious seafood choice for health-conscious preparations.

About

Baby squid, also known as baby cuttlefish or squidlets, are immature specimens of various squid species (family Loliginidae and others), typically harvested when they measure 2–4 inches in length. These young cephalopods are prized for their tender texture and delicate flavor, lacking the toughness associated with mature squid. Baby squid retain the characteristic squid morphology—a tubular mantle, eight arms with suckers, and two tentacles—but in miniature form. They are commonly found in Mediterranean, Asian, and Atlantic waters.

The flesh is pale white to translucent and becomes firm yet tender when cooked briefly. Baby squid have a mild, slightly sweet oceanic flavor with less of the "funky" undertone present in larger specimens. The ink sac, which can be used for pasta and sauces, is proportionally smaller but still functional.

Culinary Uses

Baby squid are celebrated in Mediterranean and Asian cuisines for their tender texture, which requires minimal cooking time—typically 1–3 minutes—to avoid toughness. They are commonly grilled whole, stuffed with breadcrumbs and herbs, pan-fried, or braised in tomato-based sauces. Spanish calamares a la romana (battered and fried), Italian pasta with squid ink, and Japanese tempura showcase regional preparations. Baby squid's versatility allows it to pair well with garlic, lemon, olive oil, white wine, and fresh herbs such as parsley and cilantro. The entire body is edible, including the tentacles and arms, making it an economical and waste-free ingredient.
